The Story of Padman

In the rural parts of Tamil Nadu, Arunachalam Muruganantham is a high school dropout who works as a mechanic in a small-time workshop. With a wife and two young daughters to take care of, he struggles to make ends meet. His wife is expecting their third child and they need money for the baby’s delivery costs.

One day, when he is washing clothes in a river with his sister-in-law, they find themselves surrounded by other women doing the same thing. The women complain about not being able to afford sanitary pads during their periods and resorting to using dirty rags or newspapers instead. This inspires Arunachalam to look for a solution that will help these women and give his family better prospects.

Arunachalam sets about making an inexpensive sanitary pad machine and embarks on an uphill task to raise awareness about menstrual hygiene among Indian women. He visits village after village, convincing mothers and daughters alike of the importance of hygiene. When nobody backs him financially, he sells his own land and uses it as collateral for loans so that he can keep building machines and creating jobs for local people in his village.

After several years of hard work, Arunachalam manages to build enough machines to sell them at affordable prices across India through NGOs working on menstrual hygiene issues like TINSA (The International Nonprofit Social Awareness).
